Danish Delegation Discusses Trial Of ISIS Members With Syria’s Autonomous Administration

22 mei 2022

The two sides discussed the human rights violations committed by the Turkish state and the Turkish-backed opposition factions in the region.

A delegation from Denmark discussed on Tuesday the trial of Islamic State Organization (ISIS) members with the Department of Foreign Relations in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) in the city of Qamishli.

The delegation of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, headed by Nikolaj Harris and Denmark Special Envoy to Syria, arrived in the AANES areas.

The delegation discussed with the co-chair of the Department of Foreign Relations, Abdulkarim Omar the political, economic, humanitarian and security challenges facing the AANES.

The Autonomous Administration was first formed in 2014 in the Kurdish-majority regions of Afrin, Kobani and Jazira in northern Syria following the withdrawal of the government forces. Later, it was expanded to Manbij, Tabqa, Raqqa, Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor after the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) defeated ISIS militarily.

The two sides discussed the human rights violations committed by the Turkish state and the Turkish-backed opposition factions in the region.

The Turkish forces and their affiliated armed factions frequently shell the AANES areas including Ain Issa, Kobani, Tel Tamr and other regions.

They also talked about the Turkish settlement project which was recently announced by the Turkish president.

In early May, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced preparations for settling about one million Syrian refugees in 13 Syrian areas which are not the areas the refugees are originally from.

The issue of ISIS members and the need to prosecute them, the situation in Hawl and Roj camps, and the need for the international community to assume its responsibilities regarding them were also discussed during the meeting.
