Political representatives and activists in Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria, convened on Saturday a conference to explore pathways toward dialogue, securing the rights of all Syrian components, and transitioning to a decentralized political system.
The conference, titled “Meeting of Political Forces for a Democratic, Secular Syria with a Decentralized Political Nature”, brought together diverse political groups.
North Press correspondent said that discussions focused on addressing Syria’s political deadlock by advocating for a decentralized governance model, which participants described as a practical and inclusive solution for the country’s challenges.
Tareq al-Shoufi, a politician who participated the conference, highlighted the conference’s aim to rally democratic forces globally in support of secularism and decentralization.
“We seek to build consensus among Suwayda’s political components to adopt decentralization and secular governance as effective local solutions,” al-Shoufi said.
Lina Abu Hamdan, another political activist, underlined the significance of decentralization for Suwayda, advocating for steps toward establishing an Autonomous Administration in the region.
“Implementing decentralization is essential for promoting stability and inclusivity in Suwayda,” she stated.
The event marks an important initiative to foster dialogue among Syrian political entities, reflecting growing calls for governance models that prioritize local autonomy and secularism in a fragmented Syria.
