The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) announced on Saturday boycotting the parliamentary elections held by the Syrian government, calling for creating a suitable ground for a real political transition.
The SDC, seen as a reference and political umbrella for the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), urged the Syrian people and all national and democratic actors to refrain from participating in the elections.
The Syrian government prepares to hold parliamentary elections on July 15, the fourth such elections since the conflict began. These elections come amid local and international questioning about their transparency, fairness, and potential impact on Syria’s future and political stability.
SDC’s statement stressed that the Syrian crisis can only be resolved and the aspirations of the Syrian people can be realized through a thorough political solution aligned with U.N. Security Council Resolution 2254.
The statement emphasized the importance of the intra-Syrian dialogue as a crucial foundation for achieving a sustainable political resolution that guarantees the interests of all Syrians.
The SDC urged the international community to pressure all parties to engage in a political solution process, calling for essential conditions such as releasing detainees, ensuring the safe return of refugees, ending repression against civilians, providing a free environment for political activity and media coverage, and ending the occupation of Syrian territory.
The SDC is fully prepared to join initiatives aimed at achieving a true political transition that leads to a democratic inclusive governance system in Syria, the statement said.
