RAQQA, Syria – The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) urged on Saturday the international community and the Arab League to take action to end the “Turkish occupation” of the Afrin region and other Syrian areas.

The SDC in its statement called for the expulsion of the Turkish-backed armed opposition factions, aka the Syrian National Army (SNA),  and for their prosecution in international courts. The SDC also emphasized the importance of facilitating the safe return of the indigenous Kurdish population and providing compensation to those affected.

Furthermore, the statement stressed that “Turkey’s ongoing policies towards Syria and its people undermine the prospect of a successful political solution in line with U.N. Resolution 2254.

On Jan. 20, 2018, the Turkish forces along with SNA factions launched a military operation dubbed “Olive Branch” on the Afrin region under the pretext of protecting Turkey’s national security. The operation led to fierce clashes with the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and lasted for two months. It resulted in the occupation of Afrin, the killing and injury of thousands, and the displacement of about 300,000 of the original Kurdish inhabitants. As for those who chose to remain in their homeland and not to flee, they have been subjected to widespread human rights violations.

On Jan,18, human rights organizations filed a criminal complaint with the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office, urging a comprehensive investigation into the crimes and human rights violations committed by Turkey and the SNA factions in Afrin.
