The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) urged on Saturday the international community to resolve the issue of the Islamic State (ISIS) detainees in Northeast Syria and repatriate their nationals or establish of an international court to hold them accountable.

In a statement marking the fifth anniversary of the territorial defeat of ISIS in Syria, the SDF said “the issue of ISIS detainees requires a global solution. Their home countries should repatriate their nationals, or an international court established in our region can oversee fair trials adhering to international law.”

The SDF added that ISIS still poses a great danger to the region and the world, “as it seeks to rebuild itself through its sleeper cells and tries to revive its dreams of regaining geographical control over some areas.”

The statement stressed the issue of ISIS families in Hawl Camp is a priority that cannot be ignored “as the camp is still a ticking time bomb,” adding that “Concerns are growing about the children of ISIS who are receiving the organization’s teachings within this terrorist-infested environment.”

The statement pointed out that Turkey’s attacks and its affiliated armed opposition factions, aka the Syrian National Army (SNA), on Northeast Syria “provide ISIS with all the means to rebuild its ranks and become more dangerous.”

“The lasting defeat of ISIS necessitates effective international cooperation. This includes pressuring some regional actors who provide ISIS with all forms of support,” the SDF said.

The SDF emphasized that all forces concerned with defeating terrorism must assume their responsibilities and join in the SDF’s struggle against ISIS to ensure the groups eradication and the achievement of peace and stability for the region and the world.
