Signs of discord have emerged between Syrian government forces and Iranian-backed militias in Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria coinciding with heightened regional tensions. Amid silence from Damascus regarding events in Gaza and Lebanon, Iranian-backed militias continue to provoke U.S. bases in eastern Syria, despite the government’s reluctance to engage directly in the broader conflict.
Following warnings from UAE and Russian intermediaries, Syria has avoided participation in the Israel-Hamas conflict. However, Iranian-backed militias operating within Syria have defied this stance, frequently targeting U.S. installations. These actions appear to pressure Damascus into aligning more closely with Tehran’s regional agenda, straining relations between the two allies.
Clashes in Deir ez-Zor
On Nov. 2, a confrontation between Syrian government patrols and Iranian-affiliated militants erupted in Deir ez-Zor. The clashes followed repeated warnings from the government forces to halt militia attacks on SDF-controlled territories from their positions.
Sources confirm the skirmish injured three militants, marking a rare instance of direct conflict between the allies.
A local government source revealed fears of retaliatory strikes from U.S. or Israeli forces due to Iranian provocations. This growing discord signals broader tensions as Iran attempts to use Syria as a launchpad for attacks against the U.S. and Israel.
Russian involvement
Russian forces have intensified their efforts to curb Iranian influence in the region. On Nov. 3, Russian-backed Syrian patrols dismantled a key smuggling route used by Iranian militias to transport weapons across the Euphrates.
The operation led to arrests and the establishment of a military outpost, underscoring Moscow’s intent to limit Tehran’s regional ambitions.
According to Russian analyst Dmitry Prigov, Iran’s actions threaten to destabilize areas under U.S.-aligned SDF control, prompting Moscow to act decisively.
Russia seeks to prevent Syria from becoming a battleground for Tehran’s conflict with Israel and the U.S., prioritizing stability to safeguard its own interests.
Iran’s strategic push
Iran’s alleged plans for a new offensive, targeting U.S. bases under the codename “The True Promise Three,” further complicate the situation. Analysts suggest Syria’s refusal to participate in such operations could deepen rifts between Damascus and Tehran.
As regional powers reposition themselves, Russia’s growing assertiveness in Syria reflects its bid to counter Iranian influence, maintain control, and limit the fallout from the ongoing Gaza conflict.
