Get to know the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North-East Syria (DAANES)

What is the DAANES?

The Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES), is a 'de facto' autonomous region in northeastern Syria.

It consists of self governing sub regions in the areas of Afrin, Jazira, Euphrates, Raqqa, Tabqa, Manbij, and Deir Ez-Zor.

The region gained its de facto autonomy in 2012 in the context of the ongoing conflict and the wider Syrian civil war, in which its official military force, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), has taken part.

Regional Administrations of DAANES

Each regional administration is composed of the three general councils of Legislative, Executive, and Justice. These councils oversee four subdivisions of the regions which are the Canton, District, Sub-District, and Commune. The Communes act as the lowest level and foundation of civil administration in each neighborhood. Each level of administration consists of ten local committees. These ten committees are the Local Administration, Interior, Social Affairs & Labor, Women, Education, Economy & Agriculture, Finance, Culture & Art, Health & Environment, and Youth & Sport. With each committee reporting to and coordinating with their superior office.
